Despite believing we had the time until they left the hospital to name these little fireworks, last week the Wisconsin birth registrar demanded we put their names on the record and on the double – how very New York of it.
So just 18 days since birth, we are proud to introduce:
Penelope Rose (aka Button, aka Baby C): As is custom in this family, she will have many nicknames, one of which is Poppy, after Meghan’s grandfather (Wilson ‘Rich’ Richardson, known to his grandkids as Poppa – or Poppy). ‘Rose’ because we’ve decided to give each of our girls middle names commemorative of places that are very important to us* – the rose is the state flower of New York.
Margot Clare (aka Bear, aka Baby B): We’ll call her Marty, after Casey’s father (Martin Samuel Squires). ‘Clare’ is the name of the County in Ireland to which we traveled to visit the βSheela na Gigβ of Bunratty Castle, an icon embedded in the castle’s 15th century wall that, once touched, was believed to grant the visitor a child. All those distant miles ago – having undergone years of infertility and never once imagining we’d one day be home to three little girls – we sat under that statue and shook with prayer.
*Poppy and Marty, of course, join their sister Lucy Olive, whose middle name celebrates the Reno dive bar where we met 13 years ago: the Foxy Olive.
… And the closing disclaimer: Even with shiny new true-blue human names, we’ll probably still call them Button and Bear. π We understand if you do, too.
