At 12:47pm CT, weighing in at 2 lb and 10 oz, Baby C (whose name until finalized will – in this blog, and in the NICU where she needs her own moniker – temporarily be known as ‘Button’) became the 4th member of our family. Just one sweaty OR minute later she was joined by Baby B (‘Bear’) who weighed 3 lb 6 oz.
The hastily readied OR was kept at a balmy 78 degrees, packed with 16 hospital staff, 2 parents and, eventually, 2 tiny beautiful human plums. Bear cried immediately and Button made some coos in the NICU. Both are now being attended to dutifully by the wonderful and populous NICU staff just down the hall.
After a very difficult surgery, Meghan is recovering well, wiggling all of her toes and rediscovering the wonders of tasteful food. We’ve had one family NICU visit so far (see below) with many to come.
Bear and Button are both struggling to breathe on their own. Button has since been intubated, which requires sedation, and it seems likely Bear will require similar treatment by night’s end. This isn’t unexpected for babies born at 29 weeks. There will be many treatments, measurements, tests and scans to come over the next 2 months+ in the NICU, and we will get to those as they come, but today we celebrate a victory. They’re here and their digits are divisible by 10. Score.
