NICU time seems to move slower than most, but the news seems to flow faster. Faster, sadly, than seems reasonable; the minute we compile any real bulletin, the status changes.
As of now Bear has improved markedly. She splays herself out widely at all opportunities and can be caught stealing glances at the room during most care times. She is primarily sleeping and growing (up ounces since birth). Her medical assignment of late has been of our new three favorite words: “Rest and grow.”
Sadly, Button has had the opposite experience. Perhaps out of envy, or just mere unluckiness, Button has had to have a PICC line put in (a longer-term version of an IV) just like her sister. This has been done to more reliably deliver the antibiotics she will be receiving for the next 21 days to combat a Staph infection she contracted sometime last week. As of now the doctors and nurses don’t believe anything has spread to her heart, bones, or spinal fluid (meningitis) but cultures are being routinely run just to be sure. The consistent testing has taxed her blood supply, and we are awaiting news if she is to receive a blood transfusion in the next few days. Through it all, she is a confident fighter, awing her medical team by maintaining strong vitals and her ever-present feud with all things poking and prodding. We couldn’t be more grateful for every waving fist.
We would also like to offer our fiercest wishes for comfort to beloved members of our family, the Schians, who just lost their son and brother, Matthew. We love you and we’re so sorry.
