Quick Read: The Brief and Current Stats

(Note: This post has a lot of terminology that was new to us! If you’d like to take a look at our Glossary, see here.)

The Brief

In summary: Our girls, Baby B and Baby C, are growing at different rates, which shouldn’t happen with identical twins. Baby C’s growth, in particular, is worrying: She is not gaining weight and is currently in the 9th percentile (whereas B is 99th), and her Dopplers have indicated she’s not getting the consistent blood flow she needs. Meghan is in the hospital and will remain there with round-the-clock monitoring until delivery to ensure (a) medical intervention is supporting the most ideal environment for growth for these babies – i.e. that Meghan’s blood pressure, blood sugar, and vitals are perfect; and (b) if/when the girls show any signs of distress – poor BPPs, slowed brain activity, lack of movement – we are able to deliver immediately. It’s a brave new world and we’re grateful for the support of a strong medical team and our fierce and faithful tribe (meaning you).

Still too long, give it me shorter: One of our twins is being impacted by the poorly built placenta she shares with her sister; this is resulting in weakened blood flow and sub-average growth. The plan: Meghan and twins will remain in hospital until delivery is inevitable, monitoring two key fronts: (a) Meghan’s health and its ability to provide the most ideal environment for growth; and (b) any signals from the girls that they’re not flourishing as best they can. If either front throws up flares, it’s time. We hope that time is weeks away.
